چکیده

During a search for a sporicidal agent to equal or surpass formaldehyde in activity, a group of saturated dialdehydes ranging from two to six carbons was discovered. These dialdehydes exerted a surprisingly high degree of activity in isopropanol buffered with a carbonate or bicarbonate. Without the proper buffer, practically no activity was observed. A solution of 1% glutaraldehyde, 0.3% NaHCO(3), and 70% isopropanol sterilized stainless-steel penicylinders contaminated with standardized numbers of four spore types in a shorter time than did commercially available 8% formaldehyde solution. Both glyoxal and glutaraldehyde in isopropanol destroyed spores in a relatively short time. Care was taken to eliminate bacteriostasis. Various tests were performed to evaluate accurately experimental and formaldehyde solutions.

Temperature-induced changes in the sporicidal activity and chemical properties of glutaraldehyde.

Freshly prepared 2% acid and alkaline glutaraldehyde solutions were stored at 4, 20, and 37 C. At intervals, samples were removed and changes in pH, ultraviolet spectrum, and sporicidal activity (against Bacillus pumilus spores) were recorded. Alkaline solutions stored at 4 C showed little changes in these properties, whereas such solutions stored at 37 C became turbid and showed a decrease in ...

Induced Sporicidal Activity of Chlorhexidine against Clostridium difficile Spores under Altered Physical and Chemical Conditions

BACKGROUND Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial commonly used to disinfect the skin of patients to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections. Because chlorhexidine is not sporicidal, it is not anticipated that it would have an impact on skin contamination with Clostridium difficile, the most important cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea. However, although chlorhexidine ...

Sporicidal characteristics of heated dolomite powder against Bacillus subtilis spores.

Dolomite is a double salt composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). The heat treatment of CaCO3 and MgCO3 respectively generates calcium oxide (CaO) and magnesium oxide (MgO), which have antimicrobial activity. In this study, heated dolomite powder (HDP) slurry was investigated for its sporicidal activity against Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 spores. The B. subtilis s...

Sporicidal activity of hospital disinfectants.

The sporicidal activity of hospital disinfectants was tested using two methods of test and two species of spores. Alcoholic hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde (Cidex) showed some sporicidal activity; the first was the more effective. Iodophors, formalin, and phenolics were less effective, in descending order. Chlorhexidine showed no activity.A freshly prepared solution containing 50% methanol and ...

Antioxidant mechanism of hepatoprotection by ursodeoxycholic acid in experimental alcoholic steatohepatitis.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of an antioxidant factor in the hepatoprotective effect of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in rat alcoholic steatohepatitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS The effects of UDCA (40 mg/kg, i.g., 30 days) were studied using rats fed on a high-fat diet (52% calories as fat) and administered with ethanol via intragastric intubation (4 g/kg daily, 30 days). ...
